And so, just like that, the New Year has arrived. The 2026 Express, with all of us aboard, is underway, gathering speed, seeking her rhythm as she clickety-clacks down new tracks through a familiar landscape, but one we know will be full of surprises and, at least for those who have their faces pressed against the window, the hints and clues and signs of our destination revealed. In the long unspooling of human development, a single train ride does not seem very impactful in contributing to our specie’s advancement. However, I would argue that every second counts.
I started the year with a solo morning dip into the Pacific, followed by another in the afternoon at low tide joined by Paula and our neighbors Rob and Melissa. I surfed a hat trick of waves which set the perfect tone for the new year: modest-sized waves, but perfectly engaged, good hydroplaning and a nice long ride as my face was splashed with frothy brine. Paula bravely got her toes wet to take some photos.

Next day, Paula and I flew back to Houston and prepared to head on up to the wranch. We are in the final stage of the project: bathroom tile work, countertop placement, interior painting, appliance hook-ups, furnishings and fixture installations. A bit of landscaping. The end is within reach!

What new thoughts have I for this new beginning? Lose weight, drink less, eat better, exercise more, be more generous? Those are old thoughts! Old wishes, desires and promises. So last year! My old self! What mental mischief is stirring up in New Self? What new dreams are percolating, what Holy Grail to chase, which Camino to walk?
I thought it was time for a new poem, to ring in the new year. I started getting bogged down with the eternal battle between good and evil, distinguishing angels from devils, and my struggle to comprehend the notion of time and timelessness. I tossed it all back to the scrap heap of last year and leave you with this:
The world turns round and round.
What was lost, now is found;
What was found, now is lost.
On the sea our ship is tossed
Rare cargo swept overboard
Recovered, new, faith restored.
All aboard the 2026 Express! Have a terrific ride!
Happy New Year!
